Discussing a variety of biology and evolution-related topics, this Robert Full speech explores the ways that modern engineers can apply the concepts and patterns identified and studied in nature to designing technology.
Full believes that there is too much of a gap between the ways we perceive nature's designs and the ways we are actually using nature's designs and incorporating its patterns into our work.
Sharing his research, he explains how animals with two, four, six and even eight legs produce the same motion on the ground when moving from one destination to the next. Describing evolution as something that works on the 'just good enough principle' he argues that engineers need to apply the same method of thinking when designing products. In doing so, they will save time and resources, and be able to accomplish much more and reach new heights.
