Amy Smith is best known for her speeches that search for sustainable and practical methods to provide as a healthier alternative for cooking. The American inventor strives to develop technology for the developing world, coming up with simple yet environmentally friendly ways to solve tough problems in developing countries.

She is currently the founder of D-Lab at MIT, an association that attempts to bring together innovators from all over the world to design and come up with technology that improve the lives of people in developing countries.

In 1984, Smith obtained her Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at MIT, returning after her services in the Peace Corps and obtaining her master's degree in mechanical engineering.
