As a means of supporting himself, Morris worked as a private investigator at the early stages of his career. His experience as a private investigator provided Morris with a unique approach in film documenting. His film 'The Thin Blue Line,' not only established Morris as a vital figure in American documentary film, but was also the subsequent result of from his investigative work that led to the release of an innocent man.

Morris won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2003 for his film 'The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara.' Morris won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for 'Standard Operating Procedures' in 2008. He received a degree in history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1969.
