Heiferman attended The University of Iowa and graduated in 1994. He is the CEO and co-founder of a social networking website called Meetup, which aims to help individuals use the Internet to organize community groups and local meetings. As of December 2011, 10 million people have registered on Meetup, allowing them to productively organize meetings with each other as they please.
Heiferman is also the co-founder of Fotolog and i-traffic.
In 2005, he received the Jane Addams Award from the National Conference on Citizenship and in 2004 received the Innovator of the Year award from the M.I.T. Technology Review.
