The keynotes by James Clyburn reflect his involvement in and passion for American politics. Since 1993, Clyburn has served as the U.S. Representative for South Carolina's 6th congressional district. He also held the position of the House Majority Whip from 2007 to 2011.

Born and raised in South Carolina, Clyburn graduated from South Carolina State University with a degree in history. Upon graduating, he moved to Columbia to work for Governor John C. West in 1971. Following this, he returned to school at the University of South Carolina Law School from 1972 to 1974.
