Margaret Heffernan earned a degree at Cambridge University, and worked at BBC Radio for five years. She lead the trade association IPPA, and worked on public affair campaigns in Massachusetts. She worked for CMGI, and was the CEO for InforMation Corporation, ZineZone Corporation and iCAST Corporation.

She is the author of three books with the most recently being Willful Blindness, and she is a visiting professor of entrepreneurship at Simmons College in Boston and executive in residence at Babson College.
