Before this position, he was the chief financial officer of Southwestern Bell Company. Having worked at the company since 1982, Stephensen occupied a variety of leadership roles and positions.

Stephensen received his BS from the University of Central Oklamhoma, as well as his MBA from the University of Oklahoma. Career highlights include April of 2004 when he became the COO of Southwestern Bell Company and in 2007 when he became the CEO of AT&T.
