Charan graduated as an Alma Matter from Banaras Hindu University. From there he went on to attend the Harvard Business School where he attained his doctorate and M.B.A. designations. His academic pursuits eventually brought about his teaching posts with the Harvard Business School, the Kellogg School of Management and with Boston University.

The wealth of business knowledge contained in Ram Charan's speeches coincide with his lengthy involvement with the corporate world. His experience with consulting for companies like GE and the Bank of America led him to found his own consulting firm in 1981 entitled 'Charan Associates.' His experience in the field led to his publication of several books, one of which was a best-seller. In 2005 he was recognized as a Distinguished Fellow on behalf of the National Academy of Human Resources.
