Neuwirth studied philosophy in college but started his career as a community organizer. Having always been interested in politics, economics and urban development in cities he became a journalist whose articles have graced The New York Times, The Washington Post and Forbes, among other household names. Neuwirth then decided to spend four years living in squatter communities all over the world. It was this experience that inspired the book 'Shadow Cities,' a book that delves into the study of how these communities will develop into a full-fledged city.
