Her education includes the University of California, Santa Cruz where she earned an MS in Marine Science. Later, Brownlee worked as a senior writer for Discover Magazine, Sports Illustrated, U.S. News & World Report and holds her current position with the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice and New American Foundation alongside working as a Visiting Fellow for the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
